Entrevistar a candidatos en inglés

Hacer preguntas, repreguntar, dar pistas y escribir tu valoración.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
Thanks for joining. How's your day going so far?Gracias por venir. ¿Qué tal va el día?
Here's how the next hour will look.Así va a ser la próxima hora.
There are no trick questions; we care about how you think.

What / How / Tell me about… (en vez de preguntas de sí o no)

Las preguntas abiertas hacen hablar al candidato. “Do you like…?” se contesta con un sí; “What do you like about…?” no.

Walk me through a project you're proud of.

Mark: You're the interviewer. Open the interview for a backend candidate.

Tú: Hi, thanks for joining! We'll start with a quick chat about your experience, and then spend about forty minutes on a coding exercise. Feel free to think out loud.

Agradece y explica el formato. “Explain me” es incorrecto. “Test of code” es a coding exercise.

Repreguntar

Pide detalles sin poner nervioso al candidato.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
What was your role in that, specifically?¿Cuál fue tu papel en eso, concretamente?
What would you do differently if you did it again?¿Qué harías distinto si lo volvieras a hacer?
How did you know it was working?¿Cómo supiste que estaba funcionando?

Gramática · Preguntas de seguimiento

What was your role…? · What would you do differently…? · How did you measure…?

What would you change if you had twice the traffic?

💡 “Specifically” y “for example” empujan a dejar las respuestas genéricas.

Así lo dirías

Leo: The candidate says “we improved the API a lot”. Ask a good follow-up.

Tú: That sounds great. What was your role in that, specifically? And how did you measure the improvement?

Specifically empuja a hablar de su parte. “Why it was better” necesita inversión; mejor preguntar cómo lo midió.

Dar una pista

Ayuda sin dar la solución.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
Have you considered what happens with an empty array?¿Has pensado qué pasa con un array vacío?
What data structure might help you here?¿Qué estructura de datos te podría ayudar aquí?
You're on the right track; keep going.Vas por buen camino; sigue.

Gramática · Pistas en forma de pregunta

Have you considered + -ing / + what…? · What might help…? · What if…?

Have you considered using a hash map to avoid the nested loop?

💡 Consider va con -ing: have you considered using a map?

Así lo dirías

Priya: The candidate has been stuck on a nested loop for five minutes. Give them a hint.

Tú: You're on the right track. Have you considered how you could avoid looking through the whole list every time? Is there a data structure with faster lookups?

“Use a map” da la solución. Una pregunta dirige sin resolver, y “you're on the right track” tranquiliza.

Valorar al candidato

Escribe una valoración justa, con evidencias.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
She came up with a working solution fairly quickly.
He struggled to explain his trade-offs.Le costó explicar sus trade-offs.
Overall, I'd lean towards a hire.En general, me inclino por contratar.

Gramática · Evaluar con evidencias

came up with · struggled to + verbo · showed / demonstrated · I'd lean towards…

He demonstrated solid SQL, but struggled to reason about concurrency.

💡 I'd lean towards a hire / no hire suena prudente y profesional.

Así lo dirías

Mark: What's your feedback on the candidate you just interviewed?

Tú: He came up with a clean solution quickly and communicated well, but he struggled to explain how he'd scale the design. Overall, I'd lean towards a hire.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
What I like most about the team is how much we pair.
To be honest, the codebase has some legacy parts.Siendo sincero, el código tiene partes antiguas.
You'd be working mostly on the payments platform.

What I like about X is… · The thing I value most is… · What makes it different is…

Empezar con “What I like is…” pone el foco en lo importante. Suena natural y convincente.

What makes this team different is that engineers talk to customers.

💡 Para un futuro hipotético (si te contratan), usa would: you'd be working on…

Así lo dirías

Priya: As a candidate: why should I join your team?

Tú: What I like most is how much ownership engineers have. You'd be shipping to customers in your first week, and it's fully remote, with a team that really helps each other.

Una frase hendida (What I like most is…) destaca lo importante.

Abrir, preguntar, ayudar, responder y valorar.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
We'll get back to you within a week.
It was a pleasure talking to you.Ha sido un placer hablar contigo.
I'd like a second opinion on the system design part.

walk me through · what would you do differently · have you considered + -ing · struggled to · what I like is

Walk me through your solution. Have you considered the empty case?

Explícame tu solución paso a paso.

Sarah: Give your hiring recommendation for the candidate in two or three sentences.

Tú: He came up with a working solution quickly and tested the edge cases without prompting. He struggled a bit with the scaling question, but overall I'd lean towards a hire.

Falta el sujeto (he's / he is).
