Frases clave

InglésEspañol
I was watching a film when the first alert went off.
While I was checking the logs, the database restarted.
Traffic was growing fast, so I scaled up the workers.

was/were + -ing (contexto) · pasado simple (lo que ocurrió)

I was deploying the fix when the pager went off again.

💡 When suele ir con el pasado simple y while con el continuo: while I was…, when it crashed.

Así lo dirías

Mark: How was your on-call shift last night?

Tú: Pretty busy. I was asleep when the alert went off at two, and when I logged in, the API was down.

Was asleep (o was sleeping). La alerta “sonó”: went off. Para lo que viste, pasado: when I logged in.

Lo que ya había pasado

Deja claro qué pasó antes de qué.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
By the time I logged in, the queue had already filled up.Cuando entré, la cola ya se había llenado.
It turned out someone had changed the config that afternoon.
I realised I hadn't updated the runbook.

The alert fired because the disk had filled up overnight.

💡 By the time + pasado simple, + past perfect: by the time I arrived, it had stopped.

Guía completa del Past perfect →

Así lo dirías

Priya: What was the root cause of last night's outage?

Tú: It turned out someone had changed the DNS record that afternoon, and nobody had noticed. By midnight, most requests were failing.

“It turned out” introduce la causa con naturalidad.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
The payments alert is still flapping, so keep an eye on it.La alerta de pagos sigue saltando y parándose, así que vigílala.
I've already restarted the workers twice.Ya he reiniciado los workers dos veces.
We haven't heard back from the provider yet.

The fix is already deployed, but we still see some errors and haven't found the cause yet.

💡 Still va delante del verbo principal pero detrás de be: it's still failing, I still haven't heard.

Así lo dirías

Priya: I'm taking over on-call from you. What do I need to know?

Tú: The database is still slow. I've already restarted it once, and the provider hasn't got back to us yet, so keep an eye on the ticket.

Still para lo que continúa; already entre have y el participio; yet al final con present perfect.

Pedir refuerzos

Pide ayuda con contexto y urgencia clara.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
Sorry to wake you, but I need a hand with the database.
Could you possibly join the call for ten minutes?¿Podrías unirte a la llamada diez minutos?
It's customer-facing, so I'd rather not wait until the morning.

Sorry to + verbo, but… · Could you possibly + verbo? · I'd rather not + verbo

Sorry to bother you, but could you possibly check the billing service?

💡 Sorry to bother you / Sorry to wake you son las fórmulas estándar para molestar a alguien fuera de horas.

Así lo dirías

Mark: It's 3 am and you need the database expert. Call Mark and explain.

Tú: Hi Mark, sorry to wake you. The primary database stopped accepting writes ten minutes ago, so checkout is down. I've tried restarting it with no luck. Could you possibly join the call?

“Come please” suena a pánico.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
I needn't have woken Mark; it fixed itself in five minutes.
We should have had an alert on disk space.
This alert is too noisy; let's tune the threshold.

needn't have + participio = sobró · should have + participio = faltó

Needn't have: hiciste algo innecesario. Didn't need to: no lo hiciste porque no hacía falta. Should have: lo que faltó.

We needn't have rolled back; the errors were from a bot.

Sarah: Looking back at your on-call week, what would you change?

Tú: A lot of the alerts weren't actionable, so I needn't have got up for most of them. We should have tuned the thresholds and written better runbooks.

Te levantaste sin necesidad: needn't have got up. Should have + participio, sin to.

Repaso: una semana de guardia

Narrar, explicar causas, traspasar y escalar.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
It's been a quiet week, only two alerts.
Thanks for jumping in last night.Gracias por echar una mano anoche.

Gramática · Repaso de la unidad

was doing / did · had done · still / already / yet · sorry to + verbo · needn't have / should have

Una guardia se cuenta con tiempos narrativos, se traspasa con still/already/yet y se mejora con should have y needn't have.

While I was investigating, I saw the job had failed hours earlier.

Mark: Tell me about the worst on-call incident you've handled.

Tú: One night the whole website went down. I was asleep when I got paged, and it turned out the SSL certificate had expired. I renewed it and we were back up within an hour.

Went down (fall no se usa así). Was asleep para la escena, had expired para la causa anterior, within an hour para el plazo.
