Frases clave

InglésEspañol
This is the service that handles all the payments.
Priya is the person who knows the billing code best.
We use a queue which retries failed jobs automatically.

persona + who · cosa + which · las dos + that

Leo is the engineer who built the API.

Leo: I'm new here. Can you tell me what the notifications service does?

Tú: It's the service that sends emails and push notifications to our users.

Falta el sujeto (It's), y para una cosa va that o which, no who. Además, sends con -s.

Dónde está cada cosa

Dile a alguien dónde buscar sin mandarle diez enlaces.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
That's the repo where we keep all the infrastructure code.
Ask Mark, whose team owns the mobile app.Pregúntale a Mark, cuyo equipo lleva la app móvil.
The wiki is where you'll find the setup guide.

lugar + where · persona + whose + cosa

This is the channel where we post incidents.

💡 No digas “the folder where we keep the files in”: con where ya sobra la preposición.

Así lo dirías

Sarah: Where can I find the deployment instructions?

Tú: They're in the wiki, on the page where we explain how to deploy.

Con where sobra “on it”. Y en inglés se dice on the page, no in the page.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
We used to deploy manually every Friday.Antes desplegábamos a mano todos los viernes.
The app didn't use to have any tests.Antes la app no tenía ningún test.
Did you use to work with a monolith?¿Antes trabajabas con un monolito?

Gramática · Used to

used to + verbo · didn't use to · Did you use to…?

Equivale a “antes + imperfecto”.

We used to run everything on one server.

Antes lo teníamos todo en un servidor.

💡 En negativa y pregunta se escribe use to, sin -d: didn't use to, did you use to.

Así lo dirías

Mark: How did your previous team handle deployments?

Tú: We used to deploy once a week, and it was really stressful.

Used to con -d en afirmativa.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
We use feature flags so that we can turn things off quickly.Usamos feature flags para poder apagar cosas rápido.
Run the linter before pushing to avoid failed builds.
We keep a changelog in order to track every release.

to + verbo · in order to + verbo · so that + sujeto + can/will

To es lo más corto y natural. In order to es más formal. So that se usa cuando cambia el sujeto o quieres poner can/will.

We tag every release so that support can find it.

Priya: Why do we need to write tests for every PR?

Tú: To make sure nothing breaks when we change the code.

“For to” no existe: to + verbo. Make sure es más natural que be sure aquí, y breaks lleva -s.

Los consejos que nadie escribe

Da consejos prácticos sin sonar a manual.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
Make sure you pull the latest changes before you start.
Don't forget to update the ticket when you finish. No olvides actualizar el ticket cuando termines.
Try to avoid merging on Friday afternoons.

make sure + frase · don't forget to + verbo · avoid + -ing

Avoid pushing directly to main.

Evita hacer push directamente a main.

Sarah: What's one tip you'd give someone on their first week here?

Tú: Don't wait too long to ask for help, and remember to ask in the channel.

Avoid va con -ing, y forget/remember van con to: remember to ask. “Ask for help” es la expresión natural.

Repaso: tu primera semana

Explica el proyecto de principio a fin.

Frases clave

InglésEspañol
Let me give you a quick tour of the codebase.Déjame enseñarte rápido el código.
Feel free to ping me if you get stuck.Escríbeme sin problema si te atascas.
It used to be messy, but it's much better now.

who/which/that · where/whose · used to · to/so that · avoid + -ing

Para explicar un proyecto combinas descripciones (relativos), historia (used to), propósito (to/so that) y consejos (make sure, avoid).

This is the bot that posts the alerts, so that nobody misses them.

Leo: Can you give me a quick overview of how our project works?

Tú: We've got a frontend and an API that talks to the database. We used to have a monolith, but we split it last year.

An API (empieza por vocal). Para una cosa, that, no who. Y para “antes teníamos”, used to have.
